If you think that you need to go to the Netherlands in order to find tulips, then think again.
Once of the countries I love the most when it comes to enchanting nature is Japan. Just a pity that the country is oh so expensive to visit over and over again.
But have a look at this 20 second Tulip video from Japan:
Tulips in Akebonoyama
If you visit Japan in Spring, then make sure you visit Kashiwa park. Not only for the famous "cherry blossom viewing", but also for the Akebonoyama Agricultural Park.
Kashiwa Japan: Akebonoyama Agricultural Park tulips
In the youtube video above you see Akebonoyama Agricultural Park without blooming tulips, but the youtube video below showcases a song with at the background blooming tulips from Akebonoyama Agricultural Park.
Ok, I admit, I am just not an autumn person, let alone a winter person…

Gardening in October

October is actually still quite an active month when it comes to gardening, so it’s quite a nuisance that I am having back pain. Never mind, putting on more cream makes me feel as hot as in summer. Anyway, I feel better than yesterday, so that’s a good sign I find.
Meanwhile October is a month of getting bulbs and roots out of the soil so they don’t freeze and putting new bulbs into the soil so they can get their period of cold before they start blooming again. yes, you get that right: thanks to the cold of winter you will be able to have tulips in spring!
Add to that : you cannot leave your land uncovered, so keep on throwing lots of seeds on your land in October. Since seedlings won’t grow big in autumn nor winter, you better add an excess amount of seeds so the little sprouts will still manage to cover the soil. Better late than never! Saves you a lot of work in spring and keeps your soil in good condition.

Tulip care

Tulip flowers are a hardy species but there are still some care that needs to be taken to ensure that you see those colorful tulip flowers in spring. Tulip plants should be fertilized twice a year and the best time to feed them is in early spring. Best way to do this is to add a tablespoon of granular fertilizer on the soil around each bulb. This must be done BEFORE flowering or otherwise feeding them after flowering could cause disease to set in.
Tulips need lots of water and if you live in a wet climate then you don’t need to water them that frequently. If you live in a warm area you have to make sure you water your tulip garden at least once week.
You have to be wary of animal pests like rabbits and squirrels. Voles are another problem. These are small rodents that burrow underground and will eat the tulips.
Grubs are insects that are the biggest killer of tulips. Use some time released insect/or grub killer on the ground once or twice a year.
So if you are take good care of them , you will be rewarded with beautiful colorful tulips in the end.
