Tulips care

Tulip Tree: or Liriodendron is actually a magnolia (Magnoliaceae family : Liriodendron tulipifera). The tulip tree can grow in the wild up to about 200 feet (60m) and is an excellent lumber tree. Early settlers used the tulip tree for making dugout canoes.

A picture of the tulip tree

tulip treetulip tree leafThe tulip tree is not a tulip bulb: bulbs are there to storage nutritions so the plant can stand a cold period. The next season thanks to the available nutritions in the bulb, these bulbs will be the first to grow leaves and flowers, much faster than plants without a nutrition reservoir.

A tulip tree is a tree: it keeps on growing to become taller and taller each year, with or without having a seasonal rest.

The leaves of the tulip tree are kind of "cut off" at the top, which makes the tulip tree easy to distinguish from others.

Also in the tulip tree flower seen on the angle in the picture on the right, shows less ressemblance with the tulip flower. Yet the name tulip tree mostly refers to the greenish-yellow, tulip-shaped flowers that like normal tulip flowers also bloom in spring.

black tulip magnolia

How amazing New Zealand flowers are: look at the above beautiful dark tulip flowers.

The expert eye will notice that these ‘tulips flowers’ actually are magnolia flowers. But from far, this New Zealand cultivars of the black tulip magnolia looks like a tree of dark tulips. (black tulip Vulcan x)

The resemblance to real tulip flowers is much more accurate than what you see in the tree flowers of a common tulip tree:

Thanks to Eric (see our previous post about New Zealand flower deliveries) for all the black and white pictures of a tulip tree and other Dunedin flowers!

Tulip tree growth rate

The Black tulip magnolia is actually a slow growing dwarf tulip tree. This compact rounded magnolia tree will only reach a height of 1.5 to 3 m (9 to 18 feet).

What’s great about magnolia trees is that they have a low and easy maintenance, are frost hardy and give you an abundance of tree flowers in early spring. Do remember that the flowers can be damaged by frost, so plant your magnolia tree under shelter in a partial sunny place.

If you live on the northern site of the globe, it’s now the ideal time to order online and plant your black tulip magnolia tree: they are common in UK and New Zealand.

With temperatures in Europe above 30 degrees C (around 100 degrees F), it is difficult to still speak about spring or spring bulb flowers. The nice thing about end of spring is that I can dig into my spring flower pictures and start posting them now (it’s too hot to sit outside admiring the garden anyhow…)

Tulip tree blossom

Although not a real tulip, I love tulip trees. This picture of tulip tree blossom was taken in March during sunset (look at the nice orangey gloom on the surface of the white house…)
