Normally you can also see the bulb of the hyacinth in the pot it is sold, which I find more attractive, yet beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Hyacinth perfume

Whether it is a garden hyacinth or a hyacinth bought in a pot for indoors, I just love the hyacinth fragrance! This perfume makes the hyacinth one of my favorite spring bulb flowers.

Because of the hyacinth’s pervasive perfume, the bulbs used to be very expensive. The bulbs are now grown in Holland and Great Britain and you can buy the hyacinth flower worldwide (they even sell hyacinths in Malaysia around Chinese New Year of which
the 15th night just passed), I really suggest you get this flower plant and enjoy the hyacinth perfume as well (again we should have ‘smellyvision‘ on the Internet…)

Garden hyacinth

Although hyacinths are available from November till April, the hyacinths in the gardens in Belgium and the Netherlands are only now emerging. (see our Spring flower bulb chronology)

hyacinth forcing It’s now the ideal to prepare yourself from having some colors and flowers into your house in winter.

All you have to do is pot up some of your favorite spring flowering bulbs.

Then you store these pots in a cool, dark place, until new growth emerges from the soil.

Once you see that happening, it is time to move your spring flower bulbs in front of a bright window.

I love to do this with hyacinths as I just love their perfume in a further on cool winter house. But I advise you try with the flower bulbs you can lay your hands on, so after one winter, you know what works best for you!

Hyacinth Garden, Spring "Open Gardens"Belgium

Putting hyacinth bulbs in strict rows is not really my beloved arrangement of hyacinths. Yet if you are walking nearby a hyacinth garden as the one in the picture above, you will get overwhelmed by the hyacinth fragrance. I just love the hyacinth perfume filling the air just a few days before spring.

You can visit hyacinth gardens and other spring bulb gardens in Belgium for free, just ask for "Open Gardens" (Open Tuinen in Dutch, and it beats Keukenhof Tulip Garden: the amazing tulip paradise garden in The Netherlands)
