Tulip in Keukenhof

before the end of May the door of the spring bulb garden Keukenhof near Amsterdam in The Netherlands will be closed until next spring. I still have a lot new spring bulb flowers that didn’t bloom yet. But I suppose they have to put an early date in case of a bad weather conditions make that nothing is blooming anymore but tourists are still flocking in… :-)

Meanwhile I am struck with a bad, bad headache these last few days, so updating the tulip pictures is not really a good idea. But if you really want more flowers… you can always go shopping at your local florist :-)

queen of the night black tulip

I am so happy that my Queen of the Night black tulips are finally blooming :-)

No, it’s not too late, this is one of the late blooming tulip flowers (as you know, Keukenhof: the biggest tulip garden is open until end May, so you need late blooming tulips to still attract the crowds).

Ok, ok, I agree: these tulips are not completely black, but deep purple.

Since these bulbs are quite rare and expensive (it can take up to 20 years to create a new "black tulip"), I put them all in a bucket which I perforated at the bottom.

This bucket I put in the soil in November and now my black tulips are blooming. And it makes a nice flower arrangement as well having them all snuggling up to each other.

Soonest all the leaves are dead, I dig out my bucket and put it in the basement to let the bulbs rest.

Other cultivars are La Tulipe Noire, Black Diamond and Black Beauty but I prefer my Queen of the Night black tulip.

I have been living in Europe for ages now, but that doesn’t prevent me to love my Chinese roots and to get excited when China get’s in the news again for the Olympic games or its tulips… kind of :-)

tulip dragon keukenhof

A symbol of Chinese culture has been made authentic Dutch tulips : 24000 tulips were used to make this Chinese Tulip Dragon in Keukenhof in the Netherlands.

… I do prefer real dragons but just imagine: 24.000 tulips…

Of course the dragon, measuring 10 by 15 meter, stands for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games that will start at 8-8-2008. That are 3 ‘8’s…

For those who still have no clue…an Olympic flag is flying next to the dragon, for good wishes for the first Summer Olympic Games in China ever.

For those that still don’t know what Keukenhof is all about: it’s the most popular spring attractions in the Netherlands, displaying six million blooming tulip and many, many other spring flower bulbs.
