In the Netherlands they say keuken for kitchen and hof for garden, so Keukenhof is "no more" than a kitchen garden… or is it?

Keukenhof Gardens
Only the red flowers are tulips, in front and more at the back are daffodils… : spring bulbs form the core of Keukenhof. What’s in a name: all these spring bulbs bloom in spring. Therefore Keukenhof is only open during spring. The other months are intended for maintenance activities at the gardens, and obviously for planting the bulbs.

In 2008 Keukenhof is open from 20 March to 18 May.
Why do bulbs bloom only in spring?
Flower bulbs are a product of nature. Bulbs contain "extra food" available for the plant. Therefore bulbs have an advantage on all other plants and will be the first to grow and the first to bloom after winter. You can see in the first picture that the tulips are blooming, yet there are still no leaves on the trees.
The temperature is a deciding factor: with a cold spring it takes longer for the bulbs to bloom than with a warmer spring. The mild winter ensured that you could already appreciate lots of flowering bulbs last 2 weeks.

Hyacinth Garden, Spring "Open Gardens"Belgium
Putting hyacinth bulbs in strict rows is not really my beloved arrangement of hyacinths. Yet if you are walking nearby a hyacinth garden as the one in the picture above, you will get overwhelmed by the hyacinth fragrance. I just love the hyacinth perfume filling the air just a few days before spring.
You can visit hyacinth gardens and other spring bulb gardens in Belgium for free, just ask for "Open Gardens" (Open Tuinen in Dutch, and it beats Keukenhof Tulip Garden: the amazing tulip paradise garden in The Netherlands)

Growing tulips indoors

If you don’t have a garden to grow tulip bulbs, you can settle with growing tulips indoors.
And if you have no clue about flowering bulbs indoors, then you can still enjoy what your favorite search engine thinks about tulips on the last day of winter:

I just wonder why they added this picture of tulips yesterday and not today. I would think the first day of spring is the ideal day to show a logo of spring flowering bulbs.
(Did you spot the 2 lady bugs? Talking about an eye of detail… I wonder what they will show the last day of spring and if they will continue showing other spring flowers in these coming 3 months of the spring season?
Anyway, this beginning of spring is ideal to go to your flower shop and buy yourself some tulips to grow indoors. Grow is a big word, flowering indoors would be better.
Please buy your tulips with the bulb on it: they present better, last longer and you can put them in your garden afterwards for more tulip flowers next year!
