It’s almost November: the ideal period for planting your tulip bulb. A tulip bulb needs a cold period in order to make flowers:

  • temperatures between 40 to 50 degrees F (5 to 10 degrees C)
  • for 3 to 3 and a half months

When to plant tulip bulb ?

As soon as the temperatures wont go above 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). This means November or December if you live in the northern hemisphere, yet "consult" your local climate.

How to plant tulip bulb ?

Planting a bulb goes by the following rule of thumb:

  • 1 to 3 times as deep as the size of the flower bulb.

For a tulip bulb, I like to plant them in a hole, 2 times as deep as the tulip bulb. This means: the hole you dig should be able to fit 2 tulip bulbs placed on each other.

How far to plant tulip bulb?

Again no need to learn by heart, just use your common sense: the width of your plant is how far you will minimally plant 2 plants away, so they have just enough space to live.

  • Planting them closer will make your tulip bulbs look like a tulip field.
  • Planting them further apart will make room for more spring bulbs in between.

To say a number: plant a tulip bulb 8 inches (20 cm) away from another tulip bulbs.

Tip when planting tulip bulb

Plant your tulip bulb on a place where you also have your annual flowers: as soon as the tulips stopped flowering, the green leaves of the tulips will be overshadowed by your annual plants.

chrysantenumGlobal warming or not, the weather can change overnight, so keep an eye on your thermometer and keep listening to the weather forecast. Why?

To give your autumn flowers like Chrysanthemum and Aster extra protection on a night where frost could strike!

astersYou simply cover them the evening before with a thick blanket, and the next morning your flowers will be as fresh as ever.

With a bit of luck, you can keep your Chrysanthemums and Asters blooming in November (and you know thanks to global warming, even until December…)

mow grassQuite amazing how people like Al Gore get a Nobel prize just by shouting that there is a global warming problem. I can jolly well see that from here as well!

Today I have been mowing the grass, which I must say is quite exceptional after 1 month of autumn…

For sure the tulip bulbs are not going to go in the ground this month, maybe we will put on some extra clothes and fire up the barbeque :-)
